A number of American retailers have agreed to a five year pact to ensure that there is adequate protection of the working conditions and building safety in Bangladesh, BBC News reports. This comes after the Rana Plaza building collapse which left more than 1000 dead and another building fire later in November.

It was reported that the companies, which include Wal Mart and Gap will provide loans and inspections amongst other procedures to protect the safety of its workers and the buildings they work in. European brand H&M recently announced a similar move.

"The plan is a significant step toward achieving safer factory conditions for garment workers in Bangladesh," said Glenn Murphy, the chairman and CEO of Gap.

The U.S. Labor Department also gave Bangladesh $2.5m to ensure better working conditions in its buildings.
