STATE OF NEW YORK PASSSED BILL THAT PROTECTS CHILD MODELS

On Wednesday 5th June 2013 the State of New York passed a bill providing the same amount of protection that other child performers already had, which is surprising. Given the nature of the fashion industry one would think that a Fashion Capital such as New York would already have something like this in place.

The hiring of minors in New York is regulated by sections 130-145 and 150-154 of the New York Labor Law and sections 35.03 & 35.05 [35.05 later repealed was too narrow to cover child models] and the new law has provided remedy for the lack of legal protection of child models and has expanded the meaning in the New York Labor Law which had only included other child performers to include child models into the statute. Under the old law other child performers were provided with education, adult supervision, financial services and security to name a few the new law also provides these rights to child models. Following the scandal that is Jon Anand we'd thought that this would have come about sooner rather than later and it should be pushed (if there already are no provisions for child models) for further laws such as this to be passed. Children are at serious risk of sexual and likewise abuse, hopefully more laws like this will come sooner rather than later.
